this and the last one were done during a rest-time at camp... most of the kids in my cabin were out playing, but there were 3 or 4 sticking around inside. the air conditioner was on full-blast and it felt really nice. i wanted to take a nap, but the kids in the cabin were making just enough noise to keep me awake, so i drew these weird pictures.

Here we have a rare dated drawing - which incidentally, was my brother's 16th birthday. I'm still at Camp here... probably relaxing during a rest-period, and possibly in between rounds of Tekken 3 on David Morgan's playstation.

Ah, the summer of '98. I worked at Camp Beckwith as a counselor that summer. We were "in cabin" (with campers) most of the summer, meaning you are pretty much working 24 hours a day, but we got (i think) two weeks "out of cabin," too. During those weeks, the 3 or 4 of us who were off slept in the staff cottage, which means we really didn't sleep much. After the campers bunked down, we'd have the run of the camp, along with the work and kitchen crews. It was good times.

This is a drawing I did in one of the staff cottage rooms - #3, the taj mahal. I drew this during a rest period, and I recall that my shorts were still damp from having just gone swimming. Those air conditioner units were powerul, too.

This drawing eventually became a painting - a big one. incidentally, it was the first canvas I built and stretched myself. Now the painting is hanging in Jonathan Smith's poolside apartment.

Elizabet Elliot - we rode the same bus home from school. I drew this while we waited for our bus.

this is based partly on a weird dream i think i had and partly on remembered pictures from "city of lost children" which i had discovered at blockbuster the night before. i'm aware that it has the stench of angsty high-school poetry - which is something that even in high school, I tried to rebel against- so for what it's worth, a disclaimer: this wasn't intended to be symbolic or metaphorical of anything... it was just an attempt at writing with evocative imagery. seriously.

I was reading non-stop Kerouac at this point. I was either on Dharma Bums or Desolation Angels when I drew this.

The drawing is on one of those brown paper towels that you get in High School restrooms.
