I copied this picture of Kate Moss out of an American Photo magazine. I didn't have any real life models to draw back in high school, so I had to resort to supermodels. This drawing is sort of a fluke... most everything else I drew back then (and still) was from observation or my imagination. But I guess I just wanted to see if I could copy a photograph realistically. And I guess I probably also thought she was really hot and I appreciated how you could see her nipples through her shirt. The artist's motivations are many and diverse.

This is from when I was really getting into Getz/Gilberto for the first time. I still am really into Getz/Gilberto, actually. But this was when I was also really into writing sort of cheesy high-school poetry inspired by the Beat movement. The drawing is what that album looked like -- in my mind! I know, very avant garde of me. What can I say.

more high school poetry. I submitted all of these anonymously to our school's literay mag, "Visions." I was on the editorial staff, too. I gave myself very high marks and vocally wondered who this mysterious poet in our midst could be. I'm pretty sure most of the other editors knew it was me, though. I know some of them did 'cause I told them. A few made the cut, too.

She's supposed to be on a surfboard. I did a painting of this a while later where the square in the figure was actually cut out of the canvas... my class critiqued it, and everyone thought she was sitting on a tiny island. I've always liked the drawing a lot better than the painting, to be honest.
